Lavender Lactation 24-Week Mentorship & IBCLC Curriculum Guide
A structured 24-week learning framework for aspiring IBCLCs, lactation mentees, mentors, and exam preparation.
The Lavender Lactation 24-Week Mentorship & IBCLC Curriculum was created to provide structure to an education that can otherwise feel incredibly broad.
Lactation is complex—and becoming a knowledgeable, well-rounded IBCLC requires learning far beyond what you may happen to encounter during clinical hours. This curriculum provides a week-by-week framework of important topics to study, discuss, research, and apply throughout your lactation education.
Over 24 weeks, the 70 page curriculum progresses through foundational concepts and increasingly complex areas of lactation care, helping learners identify not only what they already know, but also the subjects they may not yet have been exposed to clinically.
Who Is This For?
IBCLC Mentors
Use the curriculum as a framework for your mentorship program. Each week provides focused subject areas to guide conversations, assign independent research, reinforce clinical experiences, and help ensure important topics aren’t unintentionally missed during a mentee’s training.
IBCLC Mentees & Aspiring Lactation Professionals
Follow the curriculum alongside your clinical education to give structure to your learning. Use each week’s topics to prepare for mentorship discussions, research unfamiliar concepts, and connect what you’re studying with what you’re seeing clinically.
Those Preparing for the IBCLC Exam
Use the curriculum as a structured roadmap for independent study. The weekly topics help direct you toward subject areas relevant to IBCLC education and examination preparation, giving you a starting point for deeper research rather than trying to determine on your own what you should be studying next.
How to Use This Curriculum
There is no single right way to use this resource.
If you’re a mentor: Work through one section each week with your mentee. Use the listed topics to guide teaching and discussion, assign additional reading or research, and connect the week’s concepts to clinical cases whenever possible.
If you’re a mentee: Review each week’s curriculum before or alongside your clinical hours. Research concepts you haven’t encountered yet and bring questions back to your mentor. When you do encounter those situations clinically, you’ll already have a foundation for understanding what you’re seeing.
If you’re studying independently: Use each week as your study roadmap. Research the listed concepts using current, evidence-based resources and spend additional time on areas that are unfamiliar to you. The curriculum can help uncover subjects you may not have realized you needed to study simply because you haven’t encountered them yet in practice.
The goal isn’t simply to check topics off a list. It’s to create a progressive, intentional approach to lactation education—building the knowledge base and clinical thinking needed to understand increasingly complex breastfeeding and lactation situations.
24 Weeks. One Clear Framework.
Whether you’re teaching, learning alongside a mentor, or preparing independently, this curriculum gives you a structured path through the enormous body of knowledge involved in becoming an IBCLC.
